Mechanical Machining Processes for Difficult-to-cut Materials

The advanced cooling and lubrication technologies such as nanofluid minimum quantity lubrication (MQL), cryogenic cooling and nanosolid dry lubrication have been newly developed and their performances have been evaluated for machining of major difficult-to-cut materials such as titanium alloy, nickel alloy, carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), and so forth.

Metal Additive Manufacturing

The metal additive manufacturing system based on a directed energy deposition (DED) principle has been developed. The fiber laser head with the co-axial powder delivery module is developed and assembled to the CNC machining center to enable a 3D printing process. At the same time, a mechanical machining is carried out as a post-processing of the deposited parts to enhance accuracy. In addition, the real-time melt-pool monitoring system is developed by using a CCD camera and a pyrometer to diagnose defects of the 3D-printed parts and to predict their quality.
